Oliver Jones Trio Performs Tribute to Oscar Peterson in Calgary

Things are slowly starting to "click" with the jazz pieces I'm working on this term. Playing around with the Spanish scale has been fun but my improvising goes much more smoothly when I just use my ear and my gut. Comping is starting to get better (it helps to play along with a recording or to sing along). I'll be getting lots of inspiration Thursday night when the Oliver Jones Trio performs at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary. Oliver is a contemporary of the late Oscar Peterson, and they grew up just doors from each other. Oliver's Trio is performing a tribute to Oscar.

I just listened to this video clip of them playing. Insane technique!

Chick Corea Concert in Calgary

Multiple Grammy Award winning jazz pianist/keyboardist/composer Chick Corea is performing in Calgary on November 25 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Chick Corea is known for his work in jazz fusion. This is one of my favourite works by Chick Corea, called "Spain":

Head to Ticketmaster's website to order tickets.

I'm looking forward to watching and listening to a jazz great in action.

"Spain" is from his Chick Corea Akoustic Band album:

Friday Fun Link #22

After spending this evening doing everything BUT bookkeeping, I finally did manage to get some bookkeeping done. I'm not sure why I have such an aversion to it. I did well in high school and university accounting. Somehow, doing it for a real business seems much more difficult. This week's fun link is to First Thursdays, which begins next week. If you're looking for something to do, this is the place. You can find event listings for theatre, music, art, food, film, talks, tours and lots more, all in one place.

Off to practice now. Just one of those mini practices. I should probably run through what I'm performing tomorrow at teh Musicians' Support Group get-together.

Have a good weekend.

Friday Fun Link #5

When checking the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s website for concert information today, I noticed a link titled “Musician Demos”. What a treat to find short video clips of various orchestra members talking about their instruments. For instance, did you know that there are over 1,000 “noise-makers” in their percussion section? What made the treat extra special is that I know some of the musicians in those clips.
